New South Carolina State University Alumni Association President Elected


Orangeburg, SC, August 29, 2017-

The South Carolina State University Alumni Association has elected a new president. John J. Funny, Class of 1987 has replaced immediate past President Vernell Brown class of 1971 for a term of two years. The newly elected National President was sworn in during the association’s annual convention on July 29, 2017 in Greenville, SC. Funny, a native of Georgetown, South Carolina indicated that he is happy to serve. “This is a grand opportunity to continue to support the mission and vision of South Carolina State University, with a focus on growing the alumni membership.”
As the new South Carolina State University National Alumni Association (SCSUNAA) President, John brings a wealth of knowledge to help the growth of the alumni association. John has set forth a Presidential Platform where he believes the association must become relevant by being center-focused with its’ three-core strategic partners–Alumni Stakeholders, University, and Students; because it takes all three to stand.

Mr. Funny holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Grice Consulting Group, an internationally recognized city/urban planning, traffic engineering, transportation engineering, and water resource consulting firm; with its corporate headquarter office in Atlanta, GA, and regional offices in Washington, DC and Columbia, SC. Mr. Funny is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of all corporate business-related matters, strategic business development, strategic planning for growth and technical advisor for major projects.

South Carolina State University National Alumni Association, a 501c3 organization with 34 chapters throughout the United States was established to be an integral force of the University in supporting and reinforcing its mission, aspirations and goals. The objectives of SCSUNAA are to: develop and maintain the spirit of the University, disseminate information, promote education and scholarship and to cement the bond of fellowship and loyalty to the University.

President Funny stated, “I would like to invite each alumni to become engage with the association for the uplifting of our SCSU”.
